Gastroenterology Residency Program![]() Although LGI provided informal instruction and electives to residents for many years, in 1992, LGI began formal participation in Lancaster General Hospital's nationally-recognized Family and Community Medicine Residency Program. Each year from January through June, LGI physicians led by Dr. Steve Chen, Faculty Coordinator, instruct seven second-year residents. Each student completes a 4-week rotation designed to give exposure to a broad range of GI problems on an inpatient consultative service. The lectures provided are usually given one-on-one. This is the only formal exposure to gastroenterology these residents receive. Over the years, LGI has taught close to 100 resident physicians, many of whom remained within our community as family physicians. Click here to view the official program brochure. The rotation emphasizes: a. Formulating a primary care approach to common GI problems. b. Observing a sufficient number and variety of GI procedures to be able to rationally order procedures, as well as counsel patients. c. Knowing the indications for referral for GI problems and procedures. Several LGI physicians have extensive experience in teaching hospitals and have served as professors at leading medical schools. The knowledge and dedication of our gastroenterologists combined with their willingness to share their gifts with the next generation of physicians is a testament to the character of our practice. ![]() Faculty Coordinator Dr. Steve Chen has the distinction of being a two-time winner of the LGH Teacher of the Year Award for his exceptional resident instruction. He was most recently honored in 2009 by the AAFP, American Academy of Family Physicians with a Teaching Certificate Award. This honor is determined by every graduating third-year resident class who vote to determine the volunteer teachers whom they consider to be the best in teaching at LGH. In addition to LGH, LGI has also taught residents and medical students from other institutions such as Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center (formerly Community Hospital of Lancaster) residency program, Jefferson Medical College, Temple University Medical School, Philadlephia College of Osteopathic Medicine and even students from foreign countries who chose to spend a month of elective rotation with LGI. |
